Deceits : If there's no Heaven - CD
Ref: 24676
Many of the current Darkwave/Postpunk-bands indulge in dark, sometimes self-pitying music that triggers emotions, but mostly those that appeal to the more melancholic side of the listener. The trio DECEITS from Los Angeles can't completely free themselves from this either, but overall they offer a much more energetic and fast-paced sound. Since 2022, the group led by singer/bassist Kevin Moreno, guitarist Kevin Hernandez and drummer Sisco Saenz has released a number of albums digitally, on tape and on CD. Their physical debut album If there's No Heaven... has already been re-released several times, but has barely made it to Europe so far. Y&C has now solved this situation by finally making the album officially available in Europe, which is sure to raise DECEITS' profile quickly. In their self-description on Bandcamp, the trio clearly state where their musical roots lie... in the good old Wave and Postpunk of the 80s, namely with groups such as The Cure, Sad Lovers And Giants, The Chameleons or The Danse Society. You could list countless other bands from this era, so the vocal style is often reminiscent of The Essence. Why beat around the bush about something that is so obvious? There's no shame in making music in the style of your favourite bands without sounding like a copy throughout. With Failures, If There's No Heaven... opens directly with a catchy tune that is character-ised by driving drums and bass, plus wonderful Wave guitars and lively vocals. This has nothing to do with depression or even tearfulness. Echoing guitars enchant in Drowning in an empty Sea, while Mi Amor, Mi Vampira goes more in the Gothrock direction. While the tempo has been rather high up to this point, A Burial of Dreams is a little darker in sound and Every Promise is almost Indie Pop, as is To just fade away. The penultimate song, Serenity (Blows The Wind), has what it takes to be a hit, a perfectly catchy tune that would have been a smasher in the 2000s in the wake of the success of bands like Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Bloc Party or Editors. It also brings to mind Magdalene by the Traitrs, as well as some songs by Desperate Journalist. The album ends on a more sedate note with the album's title track, which could easily become another scene hit in a slightly punkier remix. With this album, DECEITS bring a breath of freshness to the currently somewhat self-absorbed Darkwave scene. With a lot of energy and hardly any gothic clichés, DECEITS could take off if they bring this power to the stage convincingly!Tracks : 01 Failures [03:03] 02 Drowning in an empty Sea [03:59] 03 Mi Amor, Mi Vampira [03:24] 04 A Burial of Dreams [04:59] 05 Every Promise [02:53] 06 To just fade away [02:05] 07 Serenity (Blows the Wind) [03:15] 08 If there's no Heaven...
